Who here could have possibly predicted $50M and a direct path to the Top 10 for a movie that released on the second weekend of August? Well one player did, as our boy Mario was the only one to bank the fate of their summer on the $25M-budget It Ends with Us. While the critics weren’t approving at just 59% on RT, the audience (identified by Sony as 84% women/16% men) was thoroughly impressed with a 94% RT score and ‘A-‘ CinemaScore. With two and a half weekends remaining it most certainly will be knocking out #10 Garfield, perhaps as early as Sunday. Buckle up.

Borderlands couldn’t make the weekend a two-fer, as the $115M-budget adaptation of the smash hit video game franchise pulled in a whopping… $8M. D-O-A.
Deadpool & Wolverine was once again the top movie of the weekend with $54M, but another $5M for Inside Out 2 continues to keep that top spot juuuuust out of reach.

- Inside Out 2 ($636.9M) is now the #11 domestic movie ALL TIME having just squeaked past 2023’s Barbie ($636.2M). Up next at #10 is 2015’s Jurassic World ($653M).
- #3 Despicable Me 4 ($330M) earned another $7.9M (-30.3%) in its 6th weekend, and $350M appears reachable.
- #4 Twisters ($222M) pulled in $15M (-34.2%) in its 4th weekend, and might hit $250M before the end.
- #5 Bad Boys: Ride or Die ($193M) reduced to only 152 theaters, and with just $185K is no longer moving the needle.
- #6 Kingdom of Apes ($171M) is STILL hanging around in 20 theaters in its 14th(!) weekend. Will this finally be the end?
- #7 A Quiet Place: Day One ($138M) just saw its theater count cut in half for a $464K (-67.0%) weekend. That surprise opening for IEWU now puts this spot in jeopardy.
- #8 IF ($111M) holds at #8.
- #9 Fall Guy ($92.9) holds at #9.
- #10 Garfield ($91.8M) holds at #10… but perhaps for only a few more days.
Next Weekend: Mid-August brings us 4 new Wide releases, with the only one selected being Alien: Romulus (6 players). Hopes are high for this franchise installment as the trailers have really leaned on horror. Note that this weekend was also supposed to be the release date for the now-in limbo Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 2 (picked by 1 player). Awwwwww.
