Weekend #2 is complete, and those who selected Mortal Kombat II will now stress the upcoming weeks thanks to a lower-than-expected opening (38M actual vs. 46M projected). All three newcomers, in fact, performed slightly below their estimates while Prada 2 (41M) did exactly as expected to take the weekend. An average gross of $10,990 per theater for MK2 may have been the best of all, but Warner Bros’ decision to release it in only 3,503 theaters perhaps limited the grosses. Heck, that’s practically the same quantity of theaters as The Sheep Detectives’ 3,457 from Amazon MGM Studios, which earned just 15M. You think that the pending WB sale had something to do with their decision?

Looking at this second weekend of May as a whole, however, shows promise as the combined 162M (aided by 37M from holdover Michael) is a 63% increase from one year ago. Baby steps for the box office comeback.

Next Weekend: It’ll be a quieter weekend with three new Wide releases that no one here selected. Guy Ritchie’s In the Grey looks sharp, but it could be the horror flick Obsession that really surprises. Both Prada 2 and MK2 should be able to take advantage of the bonus $$$ before Mandalorian and Grogu fly in.
