It might not have hit its four-day projection of $100M+, but the $98M opening immediately vaults Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu into the #2 spot on our list. Both the three-day and four-day openings are now the lowest in the Star Wars franchise’s Disney era. However, with a RT Audience Score of 89% (the best of any in the era) and an ‘A-‘ CinemaScore (as good as any) it could hold up well with little direct competition for the next couple weeks.

The biggest surprise of the weekend undoubtedly was the +39.3% three-day GAIN for Obsession, now sitting at $62M after just 11 days. Produced for less than $1M, we may already have a summer-wrecker on our hands.

Next Weekend: The action dies down for a week as the three new Wide releases are led by the A24 thriller/horror feature Backrooms (picked by five players), based on the original series of found-footage videos. Horror has been a nice surprise so far this summer, and the early weekend projection for Backrooms ranges from $30-45M.
