I guess the calendar turning to June was really all it took, as our number of $100M+ movies just quadrupled from 1 to 4 over the weekend. The biggest of them all was the newcomer, Inside Out 2, whose $154M obliterated all projections to become the second-highest domestic animated opening of all time (2018’s Incredibles 2 earned $182M). $154M is easily the biggest opening of 2024 (Dune: Part Two did $82M), and the biggest since last summer’s Barbie ($162M). Booyah! Inside Out 2 is immediately in the #2 spot. 41 players are VERY happy. 2 players… are not.

Holdover News

  • Apes not only continued its stranglehold on the #1 spot, but its weekend hold actually INCREASED despite the reduction of 555 theaters. Amazing.
  • Bad Boys had an excellent second-weekend hold of -40.3%, shooting it past the $100M mark and up 3 spots to #3.
  • While IF finally crossed $100M, it did fall 2 spots to #4.
  • Fall Guy slid 2 more spots down to #5 after losing 700+ theaters, but crossing $90M won’t be a problem at all. Can it get to $95M??
  • After it’s 4th weekend Garfield is at a stellar 3.26x multiplier ($78.3M against a 24.0M 3-day opening), the best of any of the 5 movies this summer that have been out that long. However, it did drop 2 spots to #6.
  • Furiosa may have dropped 2 more spots to #7 after shedding over 1,000 theaters, but hey look at that… its first sub-50% weekend at -37.2%! Time to celebrate!
  • The thriller-horror flicks Strangers, Tarot and Watchers all currently occupy #s 8, 9 and 10, but they’ll all drop off one by one as new movies hit $30M+.

Next Weekend: After two very promising weekends we now take a breather as there is only one Wide release of note, though it won’t be a as wide-reaching as hoped. Originally scheduled for a 12/1/23 release, The Bikeriders (picked by 2 players) is only expected to play in 2,500 theaters. While it does look like a cool drama flick with an early 82% critics rating on RT, Boxoffice Pro projects only a $7-$12M opening. As we’ve already seen once this summer, a quiet weekend of newcomers means a nice opportunity for all of the holdovers.
