The new slate of movies certainly did not impress as Deadpool & Wolverine “won” the weekend with $18M. The best of the newcomers was Blink Twice at $7M. About what we’d expect from late August releases.

The race for #10 was the story of the weekend, and The Fall Guy continues to stiffarm all competition to cling tightly to that spot with $92.9M. Thanks to a disappointing second-weekend hold of -61% and $16M, Alien: Romulus is now at $72.8M. With the SMP ending on Saturday August 31 it won’t even have the full weekend for one final scare.

With only 5 days remaining, here is our current Scoreboard among those with 9 correct picks. Unless Mario plans to drop $1M over the next several days for charitable showings of Garfield to the masses, or Alien somehow has an explosive second week (not weekend), my Deviation Score should keep me atop the list. Joy!

Holdover News

  • Inside Out 2 ($646.2M) remains the #11 domestic movie ALL TIME after another $2M (-41.2%) in its 11th weekend. It came very close but wasn’t able to catch #10 2015’s Jurassic World ($653M) in time. It still might over the next month.
  • #2 Deadpool & Wolverine ($577.2M) is actually outpacing IO2 through 5 weekends ($577M vs. $571M), and may very well finish higher when it’s all said and done. But not during this summer.
  • #3 Despicable Me 4 ($348.1M) earned another $4.2M (-21.6%), and its 8th weekend multiplier of 4.64x is the best of any movie this summer (including IO2’s 4.07x).
  • #4 Twisters ($248.6M) got another $6.1M over the weekend as the chase to $250M is on.
  • #5 Bad Boys: Ride or Die ($193.5M) is still going through 12 weekends, but it’s completely running on fumes.
  • #6 Kingdom of Apes ($171.1M) NOW seems to have called it a summer with no reported earnings.
  • #7 A Quiet Place: Day One ($138.9M) also appears to have called it a summer with no reported earnings.
  • #8 It Ends with Us ($120.6) was able to jump one final spot after an $11.6M weekend. Amazing.
  • #9 IF ($111.1M) slid one spot but won’t fall any further.
  • #10 Fall Guy ($92.9) isn’t giving up without a fight.

Next Weekend: The final weekend of August will be a partial one, as our pool ends after Saturday’s earnings. Congrats to all of our players, as no one picked any of the 4 new Wide releases for just 2 days of box office! *golf clap*
