LOTS of movement in the Top 10 this weekend, most notably being the 7 spot jump by Oppenheimer to go along with the (very temporary) drop out by Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. 7 other movies slid around slightly, including 1 spot climbs for Barbie and Sound of Freedom. By this time next week M:I7 will be right back in as both it and Elemental are only several million behind the now-retired Fast X.
Nothing much to say about the newcomers in terms of competition, as Haunted Mansion underachieved with just $25M (called it). Talk To Me certainly surprised by tripling its conservative projection with $10M.
Only 10 days in and Barbie has already crossed the $350M plateau. This Monday it made another $15M to put it at $366M, and now being less than $13M behind Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse we should be looking at a new (and permanent) #1 by EOD Wednesday. $400M for Barbie is a given, and $500M is a possibility at this pace.
Oppenheimer is already at $174M after 10 days, good for the #5 spot. It’s currently $95M away from The Little Mermaid, and after a $46M second weekend it could very well move up 1 more.
With Fast X‘s departure a guarantee the matchup to now focus on is Elemental ($145M) vs. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts ($156M). Elemental just had a $3.5M weekend against Transformers’ $400K, and the upcoming release this week could very well become a threat for the #10 spot.
Next Weekend: We get an extra early head start as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (selected by 2 players) not only moved up from Friday 8/4 to Wednesday 8/2, but as goes movie releases these days it’s really opening fully on Tuesday 8/1. Shoot, my local AMC had an extra 7:00pm showing on Monday 7/31. It’s already got a 94% rating on RT… so watch out.
