Here’s hoping everyone had a great July 4th holiday weekend (#250 in the books!)… and still have all of their fingers.
The warnings were out there but I didn’t listen, as evidently July 4th being on a Saturday DOES have an impact on the box office. Right down the line each projection fell short of expectation, starting with Minions & Monsters. Don’t fear, those who selected it, as it’ll still make our Top 10. But a 3-day $37M and 5-day $62M didn’t meet the forecasted $45M/$72M. For now it sits at #11 as our Top 10 remains intact.
Also falling short this weekend were the other top forecasted in Toy Story 5 ($30.3M vs projected $35.0M), Young Washington ($19.3M vs projected $25.3M), Supergirl ($8.6M vs $11.5M) and our beloved Obsession ($5.2M vs $6.8M). Of course, I’ll still chalk it up to the distraction that is World Cup Fever with the US still alive through the weekend.
Scoreboard Leaders
With both Minions and Supergirl falling short we have no new entries in our Top 10. The top of the Scoreboard still has our 3 players with 6 correct picks… but now in a new order.

Holdover News
- #1 Toy Story 5 cracked the $350M plateau with a $30.3M weekend (-57.2%). At $365.6M it shot up to #71 on the All Time domestic box office list. Next on the list at #70 is 2013’s Despicable Me 2 ($368.0M). It could realistically hit $400M after next weekend.
- While there were plenty of holds below 50% this weekend, #2 Obsession naturally wasn’t one of them with another $5.2M (-46.4%). It also must be noted that its 8-week multiplier of 14.26x shatters every single movie tracked in the SMP. Its $245.2M total is now at #174 All Time. Next on the list at #173 is 2014’s Transformers: Age of Extinction ($245.4M).
- #3 The Devil Wears Prada 2 stays in place at $220.2M after a $150K weekend from just 115 theaters.
- #4 Backrooms had the best hold of the weekend for $3.3M (-24.5%). As expected it had no problem hitting $190M and could still reach $200M.
- #5 Mandalorian and Grogu lost another 675 theaters to finally have a weekend below $1M with $564K (-67.8%). At $176.8M it stays comfortably in the top half of our list.
- #6 Scary Movie holds after a $1.1M weekend (-62.6%). Now at $106.2M, hitting $110M is a possibility but it’ll still drop at least one spot after next weekend. That’s because…
- #7 Disclosure Day had a great weekend hold for $5.7M (-30.3%), and became our 7th movie to cross the $100M mark at $105.0M.
- #8 Mortal Kombat II at $79.7M leads the short list of sub-$100M movies still hanging around due to the failures of others. Its $20K weekend is due to its theater count going UP 12 screens.
- #9 The Sheep Detectives at $65.9M continues to earn $$$ at the theater with a $149K weekend despite already being available on Amazon Prime.
- #10 Masters of the Universe at $63.8M gets one more week in the limelight after a $724K weekend (-68.7%) before disappearing for good.
Next Weekend: Could this be the weekend we get back on track with the live-action Moana (our 3rd of 5 unanimous selections)? BOT is projecting an opening of $57-72M, which frankly would be disappointing as just a month ago it was tracking $75-96M. Also opening this weekend is Evil Dead Burn (selected by 1 player), which hopes to take advantage of the horror craze this summer. Early tracking of $25-32M is better than expected.
