That $168M projection for Toy Story 5 turned out to be a bit aggressive, but its actual pull of $159M immediately reached the #5 spot in our Top 10. It also hit numerous milestones including:
- The biggest opening of the Toy Story franchise (Toy Story 4 – $120M)
- The biggest opening of 2026 (The Super Mario Galaxy Movie – $131M)
- The biggest SMP opening since July 2024 (Deadpool & Wolverine – $211M)
- The 2nd biggest opening for Pixar (The Incredibles 2 – $182M)
- The 3rd biggest opening for an animated film (The Lion King – $191M and The Incredibles 2 – $182M)
With TS5 occupying the family audiences, it was a pretty good weekend for the holdovers with the exception of Disclosure Day (-60.2%).

Holdover News
- #1 The Devil Wears Prada 2 lost another 575 theaters in its 8th weekend (-53.3%) to finally earn below $1M. It’ll still reach $220M next weekend.
- What more can we say about #2 Obsession, which raked in another $13M in its SIXTH weekend (-29.5%). It nearly caught Prada 2 for the top spot before TS5 reigns supreme, but this is the one with staying power as it’s now tracking $250M.
- #3 Backrooms jumps a spot with a nice 4th weekend hold of -37.7% for $7M. At $175M it should have no problem hitting $190M, with $200M still a possibility.
- #4 Mandalorian and Grogu had a great 5th weekend hold of -13.1% for $4M, but still slips one spot after losing 680 theaters. It’ll bleed more theaters over the next several weeks in its push for $180M.
- #6 Scary Movie falls a spot in its 3rd weekend with just $6M for a -55% drop, largely due to losing 779 theaters. At $97M, a $120M total no longer appears reachable.
- #7 Mortal Kombat II sides another spot with just $59K in 37 theaters. This has got to be the end at $79M, right?
- After a disappointing $44M opening for #8 Disclosure Day, it gets another punch to the gut with a -60.2% drop in its second weekend for $17M. At $78M it moved up one spot, but will need a much better third weekend to pull ahead of Scary Movie’s pace.
- Another $1M for #9 The Sheep Detectives in its 7th weekend, which keeps hanging on at $64M. I didn’t realize until just now that this movie had a $75M budget. Yikes.
- #10 Masters of the Universe enjoyed a nice 3rd weekend drop of -30.8% despite shedding 1,160(!) theaters for $6M, but still falls two spots to $57M due to its weak opening. Unless Supergirl really impresses it’ll survive one more weekend in the Top 10.
Next Weekend: Three more Wide releases with the biggie being Supergirl (selected by 34 players). BOT’s opening projections have slipped over the past several weeks from $56M to $51M to the current $48M, while Boxoffice Pro is projecting a $45-55M range. Of course, one year ago the projections also weren’t kind to Superman, which ended up being our #2 movie of the summer. And yes, Superman himself does make an appearance in the final trailer. Don’t write its obituary just yet.
