$15M for Trap fell right in line with M. Night Shyamalan’s most recent openings, and not in a good way: $14M for Knock at the Cabin (2023) and $16M for Old (2021). $6M for Harold and the Purple Crayon is just a shame.

Deadpool & Wolverine, on the other hand, scored the summer’s second-biggest second weekend with $96M. Only… you guessed it… Inside Out 2 did better with $101M in its second frame. Despite greatly exceeding its weekend’s projection, the race for #1 will depend on D&W’s week-over-week performance as compared to IO2’s. There are only 3.5 weekends left in the summer and D&W is currently $231.5M behind.

Now that our Scoreboard page is functional we can see just how close the pool is this summer as we have our own Race to #1. Among the 16 players with 9 correct picks, Chris was our leader going into the weekend. The latest top 10 shuffle, however, moved both Curt and Nathan to the top of the list. Chris, George, JP and I are right there as only 7 Deviation Points separate 1st and 6th Places. I just want to say that if any new release can pull in $92M the top 3 names drop out (all took Garfield). And guess who is currently at #4 😉

Holdover News

  • Inside Out 2 ($626M) just doesn’t stop as it earned another $6M with an excellent -21.0% hold. It’s now the #12 domestic movie ALL TIME. Next up at #11 is 2023’s Barbie ($636M).
  • Deadpool & Wolverine ($395M) pushed its way up to #2, where it may very well end up based on the continued success for IO2.
  • Despicable Me 4 ($314M) is now locked in at #3 with no chance for any movie below to catch it.
  • Twisters ($195M) barely missed $200M in only its third weekend, but that was good enough to climb up 2 spots to #4 where it is now locked in.
  • Bad Boys: Ride or Die ($193M) slipped to #5 as expected, but has a large enough lead to remain locked in.
  • Kingdom of Apes ($171M) also slipped 1 spot to #6, and it should be safe from all newcomers.
  • A Quiet Place: Day One ($137M) appears to be set at #7… unless any upcoming movies blow up with huge opening weekends.
  • IF ($111M) holds at #8.
  • Fall Guy ($92.9) holds at #9.
  • Garfield ($91.8M) holds at #10 despite its reluctance to leave theaters. $17K from 41 theaters is just too good to pass up I suppose.

Next Weekend: Three new Wide releases will be led by Borderlands (selected by 4 players) and It Ends With Us (1 player). Boxoffice Pro has a surprising early estimate of $35-55M for It Ends With Us, but also a surprising estimate of $10-20M for Borderlands. What the heck happened to this one??
