Minions: The Rise of Gru absolutely exploded over the 4-day 4th of July holiday weekend, blowing away the projected $92M with a new record $123M. Minions 2 earned $107M over the first 3 days, nearly surpassing the entire 4-day total of the prior record holder (2011’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon at $115M). Hopefully everyone here placed Minions 2 over Lightyear. Ummm oops.
Side note – Top Gun 2 just made another $32M over the holiday to put its current tally at $570M. At currently #12 domestic all-time, it has #11’s Incredibles 2 ($608M) in its sight.
Next Weekend: Bring on the fun! Thor: Love and Thunder (wisely selected by all players) should easily continue the MCU’s box office dominance. It’s got an early 71% critics rating on RT, but the Top Critics only have it at 58%. Not worried… yet.
