Well this is an unusual weekend. No major releases… which means Top Gun 2 is going to kick some more ass. Projections have it earning another $57M, but I wouldn’t be shocked if that total was higher based on its A+ CinemaScore and stellar reviews. Difficult to compare it against prior Memorial Day releases, as none of them got a freebie the following weekend. To be fair, EVERY movie released so far gets a freebie weekend to pad some bucks.
What we do get brand new, however, is a couple indie thrillers that (wisely) no one selected. Though they do have nice RT ratings from the critics.
Boxoffice.com’s predictions for this weekend:
1) Top Gun: Maverick – 57M (242.6M)
2) Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness – 9.7M (388.3M)
3) The Bob’s Burgers Movie – 5M (23.1M)
4) Downton Abbey: A New Era – 3.5M (35.4M)
8) Crimes of the Future – 1.3M (1.3M)
10) Watcher – 500K (500K)
Rotten Tomatoes freshness ratings (Critics / Audience Score):
Crimes of the Future = 78% / none
Watcher = 83% / none
Theater count:
Crimes of the Future = 900
Watcher = 900
CinemaScore ratings:
Crimes of the Future = n/a
Watcher = n/a
