Holdover News
- Inside Out 2 ($613M) earned another $8M with an excellent -32.8% hold. It’s now the #14 domestic movie ALL TIME, and at $1.46B globally it just became the #1 Animated movie of all time (surpassing 2013’s Frozen II. Up next at #13 is 2017’s Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi ($620M), and at #12 is 2012’s The Avengers ($623M).
- Despicable Me 4 ($291M) had an excellent 4th weekend hold of -40.3%. But this will be its final weekend in the #2 spot.
- Bad Boys: Ride or Die ($191M) lost 710 theaters to slip to #4, and may slip once more after next weekend.
- Kingdom of Apes ($170M) and #5 is now the longest-running movie of the summer at 12 weekends. And despite losing 110 theaters to put it at 40 total, it actually had a positive weekend hold (+72.7%).
- Thanks to D&W, Twisters ($154M) naturally was going to see a second weekend hold below 50%. Yet it still managed to climb 3 spots to #6 after adding 19 theaters.
- A Quiet Place: Day One ($134M) had a surprisingly nice hold of -51% after losing nearly 1,000 theaters. However, it still slid 2 spots to #7.
- IF ($111M) with a 2-spot slide down to #8.
- Even after dropping to #9, Fall Guy ($92.9) appears to be in (for now).
- Garfield ($91.8M) is down to 53 theaters and now down to #10, but refuses to give up with a $21K weekend. It needs to hope that Longlegs or another newcomer doesn’t catch fire.
Next Weekend: While the month of August is often a dumping ground for the movies that Hollywood wants to forget, this summer’s has several weeks of intriguing releases. To start we get two Wide releases, including the newest M. Night Shyamalan thriller, Trap (picked by 2 players). We also get the family adventure, Harold and the Purple Crayon (1 player).
