World Cup fever has just taken over North America, with 48 global teams now competing in 16 host cities across the US, Canada and Mexico. We wouldn’t have expected the weekend’s box office to be negatively impacted, but how else to explain an across-the-board underachievement. All seven movies in the weekend forecast earned less than projected, beginning with Disclosure Day (just a $44M opening vs. an expected $51M), while the second weekend holdovers Scary Movie (-73.9%) and Masters of the Universe (-69.7%) suffered greatly. $44M for DD falls in line with 2022’s alien flick Nope ($44M) and Spielberg’s own 2018 hit Ready Player One ($41M), but as another fringe movie this summer it’ll make 28 players sweat. $100M is likely, though its ‘B’ CinemaScore may stunt the long-term gain.
The one player who selected The Furious ($2.8M) is the current leader for the Bonehead Award. It met the minimum $1 requirement to qualify, and will now have to wait all summer for the last-weekend selections to see if it “wins”.

Holdover News
- #1 The Devil Wears Prada 2 lost nearly half its theaters (down to 1,000) yet still earned over $1M in its 7th weekend. Its total $217M remains just outside the All Time domestic Top 200, as $227M is the current cutoff.
- #2 Obsession moves up one spot thanks to another $19M (-25.1%) in its 5th weekend. Presently at $188M, All Time Top 200 is a real possibility.
- #3 Mandalorian and Grogu slips one spot. Still playing in over 2,600 theaters but with a poor 4-week multiplier at 2.02x and a total $165M, we can expect that count to slash.
- #4 Backrooms recovered a bit in its 3rd weekend with only a -56.1% drop for $11.5M. At $160M it might leap Mando as soon as next weekend.
- #5 Scary Movie moves up the list despite a terrible -73.9% drop in its 2nd weekend for $14M. $100M is right around the corner, but that 1.55x 2-week multiplier is the very worst the summer among the major films.
- #6 Mortal Kombat II is nearly toast with just $176K in 174 theaters. It no longer looks like it’ll reach $80M.
- #7 The Sheep Detectives did cross $60M thanks to a strong -36.9% hold, good for a 6th weekend of $1.4M.
- #8 Masters of the Universe also suffered a terrible 2nd weekend hold of -69.7% for $8.9M. Its 1.6x 2-week multiplier is the second-worst this summer among the major films. Currently at $46M, it might not even reach $70M.
- #10 The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act gets its last time to shine in the Top 10 at $23M despite a possible(?) record -95.2% second-weekend drop.
Next Weekend: After a couple fringe-pick weekends we now get a sure fire lock in the unanimously selected Toy Story 5. Latest tracking is a $150-$184M weekend, potentially debuting at #3 on our list.
