No new movies was absolutely no problem for us as The Odyssey just experienced the largest 2nd weekend of the summer, raking in another $90M(!) for a 10-day total of $289M. That effort is our 2nd highest total through 2 weekends, as only Toy Story 5 fared better ($298M). It should be no surprise that Odyssey’s 2nd weekend multiplier of 2.34x was our 3rd best, even better than TS5’s 1.87x. Christopher Nolan continues to dominate at the box office.
No new major Wide releases allowed the holdovers across the board to pad their numbers. No new releases also means no new entries into the Top 10. For now.

- #1 Toy Story 5 ($10.1M) enjoyed another excellent hold (-26.2%) in its 6th weekend. At $448.7M it climbed 4 spots to #31 on the All Time domestic box office list… and now owns the franchise record. Next on the list at #30 is 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ($453.8M).
- #2 The Odyssey ($90.0M) shot up 5 spots in only its 2nd weekend after a ridiculous hold of -27.1% considering its $123M opening. A $289.3M total is already at #135 All Time. Next on the list at #134 is 2001’s beloved Monster’s Inc. ($290.6M).
- #3 Obsession ($1.5M) starts the string of movies dropping 1 spot through no fault of its own, as its 11th weekend hold (-35.4%) continues its reign in the SMP. Its $261.41M total actually holds steady at #158 All Time thanks to Odyssey’s explosion. Next on the list at the new #157 is 2004’s The Incredibles ($261.44M).
- After 12 weekends #4 The Devil Wears Prada 2 finally called it a summer, finishing at $220.6M.
- #5 Backrooms ($325K) has begun winding down in its 9th weekend, and is now expected to fall just short of $200M at a current total $196.7M.
- Disney is trying squeeze every single dollar out of #6 Mandalorian and Grogu ($69K) at the box office knowing it won’t be included in the Disney+ membership until fall. At $177.6M they might want to reconsider as it wasn’t the hit they were looking for.
- #7 Minions & Monsters ($9.7M) also drops a spot despite a great 4th weekend hold (-28.3%). Now at $155M, its 4th weekend multiplier of 4.2x is easily our 2nd best of the summer (Obsession‘s multiplier of 8.83x was simply unrealistic for anything else to achieve).
- #8 Disclosure Day ($664K) is now winding down in its 7th weekend. Simply put, $116M is a disappointment.
- #9 Scary Movie ($125K) surprisingly stays above the cut line for another weekend, as $108M is about to get surpassed by…
- #10 Moana ($10.6M) makes our entire Top 10 triple digit winners, as its $102.6M total ensures we won’t have a sub-$100M movie making the cut. With a 3rd weekend hold of -40.7% it’ll hang around for good.
Next Weekend: The last of our 5 unanimous selections with an average placement of 1.7, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is expected to shatter records. BOT is currently projecting a $228M-274M opening WEEKEND, with a potential total gross of $590M. Sheeeeoooooooot!
