We’ve got multiple Top 10 shuffles after the weekend as it’s 1 out and 1 in, plus a couple flippy flops. There’s a new #1 in town as Spidey-Verse just hit $357.7M… overtaking GOTG3’s total in 4 fewer weekends. Only 1 of us here saw Spidey being THAT good (props to Paul Harrison). Indy 5 climbed a couple spots to #6, while Flash fell a couple of its own to #8. And after only 6 days at the box office Sound of Freedom joins in at #10, while the brief fun ends for No Hard Feelings.
This weekend was full of surprises, starting with Sound of Freedom earning another $19M when it was only projected to make $8M. Word of mouth is proving to be strong for this one, and that #10 spot may be be up for grabs. Also greatly exceeding expectations was Insidious: The Red Door, which scared up $33M against its projected $24M. But that C+ CinemaScore says it should crash fast. And then there’s Joy Ride which couldn’t even cross $6M, falling short of its own low projection. That B- CinemaScore doesn’t jive with its RT scores of 92%/90%. Sounds like some kind of funny math.
Lastly, it needs to be said (again) that Elemental exceeded its weekend projection with an incredible -17.3% hold. That right there was the best weekend hold of any major release per the latest Weekend Comparisons. And after already achieving the highest 2nd Weekend Multiplier of the summer (2.21x) it just had the highest 4th Weekend Multipler by a long shot (3.70x). I can’t see it missing the cut at this rate.
Next Weekend: The weekend gets a head start as Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One releases on Wednesday 7/12. All 38 of us wisely picked it, as Boxoffice Pro has an early projection of $90-$110M over its 5-day opening. Oh, and that stellar 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes is the highest of the franchise.
